The United States NSF highlights work of UIC physicists

The United States National Science Foundation (NSF) highlights the work of Professor Nikos Varelas, the UIC high energy particle physics group, and others in a news item "The Quark's the Thing" available on the SEE Innovation website. Using ultra-high energy colliding beams of protons at the Large Hadron Collider, physicists have shown that if quarks - the constituents of protons and neutrons that make up the atomic nucleus - are composed of smaller elements, then they must be less than 1/100,000 the size of the proton. This is the most stringent limit ever set on the size of potential quark constituents.
