Titte: Nothing, Anything or Everything: String Theory, a Theory of What?

Abstract: This colloquium gives a broad overview of string theory and its applications to particle and astro-particle physics. String theory is an ambitious theoretical endeavour that encompasses quantum gravity, black holes, mathematics and various aspects of quantum field theory. The focus here will be on string theory as a potential theory of this universe: if string theory is true, how would we ever know? I will pay particular attention to the physics of moduli and axions, two of the most generic low-energy footprints of string theory as a fundamental theory of this universe, and how they can manifest themselves in the early and late universe.
