The ability to command and direct attention, what’s called “stage presence,” is critical for scientists to effectively teach classes, present research at conferences (or in dissertation defenses), and convince funders to support their work. It is the skillful use of body language and verbal rhetoric. And it can be learned and refined through observation, experimentation, and practice. Most singers, actors, and dancers were not born performers; rather, they train to remain inwardly calm while outwardly radiating energy and confidence. Neil deGrasse Tyson can do it. Bill Nye the Science Guy can do it. You can, too. If you’re nervous about speaking in front of others, or if you’re already good and you just want to learn some new tricks, this colloquium will provide you with ideas and practices to make your presentations more dynamic and engaging and help you appear comfortable and approachable to your audiences (be they students, peers, or funders). This is an interactive colloquium, so dress comfortably and bring an open mind!
