Abstract:
High-pressure and high-temperature experiments on strongly correlated iron-bearing minerals are crucial for understanding planetary interiors. Studies of iron-magnesium deep mantle silicates and oxides provide valuable insights into a quantum phenomenon known as iron spin crossover (ISC). ISC consists of a gradual change in iron's spin state under compression. Recent simultaneous investigations at high pressures and temperatures have yielded significant microscopic data on this phenomenon. I will review key experimental findings, compare them with ab initio predictions and thermodynamic models, demonstrate the macroscopic effects of ISC, and explore its potential signature in the Earth’s mantle.
