The United States National Science Foundation (NSF) highlights the work of Professor Nikos Varelas,
the UIC high energy particle physics group, and others in a news item "The Quark's the Thing
" available on the SEE Innovation website
. Using ultra-high energy colliding beams of protons at the Large Hadron Collider, physicists have shown that if quarks - the constituents of protons and neutrons that make up the atomic nucleus - are composed of smaller elements, then they must be less than 1/100,000 the size of the proton. This is the most stringent limit ever set on the size of potential quark constituents.
