Title: Searching for the Darkest Galaxies
Colloq flyer 10-12
Abstract: The population of small satellite galaxies orbiting our Milky Way includes the least luminous, most ancient, and most dark matter dominated galaxies in the known universe. These galaxies have become pivotal for our understanding of galaxy formation and the cold dark matter paradigm. Since the beginning of last year, new optical imaging surveys have potentially doubled the known population of Milky Way satellite galaxies. I will discuss recent results in the search for satellite galaxies and what these results can tell us about the formation of the first stars and galaxies, as well as the fundamental nature of dark matter.
