Title:  Photovoltaic R & D – Indian perspective and Silicon Nanowire PV

Abstract: With the recent thrust on solar energy around the globe, the photovoltaic research and development has gained great importance. The Indian government has launched major initiative in this field. I am the chairman of the R&D Project Advisory Committee for Photovoltaics of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. I will present an overview of the research efforts in India. While the PV market continues to be dominated by the silicon crystalline solar cells, they have some limitations. Scientists continue to explore new materials and technologies. Among the many approaches, is the exploration of nanowires. In the second part of the talk of I will present some of our work on silicon nanowire photovoltaics.
