Title: The Science of Chalcopyrite Materials for Solar Cell Applications
Abstract: This talk presents an introduction to photovoltaics (solar cells) as part of a renewable energy future for the United States. It reviews briefly the current status of photovoltaic technologies and the challenges and opportunities for each. One of the most promising and one which provides an interesting laboratory for many ways a semiconductor can behave strangely is CuInSe2 and the related chalcopyrite semiconductors. The talk describes some these behaviors and the experimental evidence for them. The ways in which the defects affect solar cells based on the material is briefly covered.
