"Gravity as an Entropic Force"
Last year Erik Verlinde's paper "On the Origin of Gravity and the Laws of Newton" generated a flurry of interest in the idea that gravity may not be a fundamental force of nature, but rather a "fictitious force" which exists only once one has "coarse-grained out" microscopic degrees of freedom. He proceeds to give a heuristic derivation of Newton's second law and the equation for gravitational force starting from the holographic principle. In this talk, I will give an introductory review of this paper and also discuss some criticisms raised against it.
Refreshments will be served at 2:45 in SES 2214
