"Mystery Behind the WKB Approximations"
Abstract: In this talk, I will review the WKB approximations using approaches different from that of the standard textbooks. I will start with Bremmer's interpretation of the WKB approximation. Then a "flow equation" describing the change of the local reflection amplitude will be derived. Based on that equation, I will introduce the Stokes diagram and study the Stokes phenomena. Finally, I will concentrate on the problem of the bound states and clarify why in many cases, the eigenvalue determined by the WKB approximations are much more accurate than one expects.
