SUMMARY:Colloquium- "From low-energy gaseous positronics to geophysics and beyond: a personal tour" with Prof. Tim Killeen (University of Illinois System)
DESCRIPTION:"From low-energy gaseous positronics to geophysics and beyond: a personal tour" Tim Killeen President, University of Illinois System This semi-formal talk will present some aspects of my multi-facetted career path in scientific research, education and administration; all starting with an undergraduate BSc and a PhD in physics at University College London. Having had the great fortune to have had many amazing leaders as mentors along the way, I hope to briefly describe by personal example just how many interesting doors can open-up for you with an education in fundamental physics. And I appreciate the ancient Greek root of the word ?physics? as meaning the ?natural science? of ?things? - since such a definition can even extend to my current work as president of the University of Illinois System ? another ?thing?. A theme of the talk and the examples chosen will relate to my abiding interest in working to expand the role of public education and interdisciplinary research in understanding and improving the human condition on our finite planet. No need to take notes! In addition, we will be hosting a poster session with President Killeen from 1:30 to 2:45 PM on the 3rd floor of the SES rotunda. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your research and engage with both President Killeen and your colleagues from the UIC Physics Department. Light refreshments will be served. | Event post: https://phys.uic.edu/events?page_id=5710
