Bubble chambers for the direct detection of dark matter.

The PICO collaboration uses bubble chambers to search for dark matter. The bubble chambers are operated at a lower degree of superheat as compared to those of the 1960’s, providing much longer live fractions, and excellent rejection of the dominant gamma background. The ~30 liter chambers, located in the SNOLAB deep underground laboratory, are filled with fluorinated target fluids ideally suited for investigating spin-dependent WIMP-proton interactions. PICO-500, currently being designed for a projected exposure on the scale of ton-years, is projected to improve existing WIMP-proton scattering sensitivity by two orders of magnitude.
