DESCRIPTION:Title: The Quark-Gluon Plasma in the AdS/CFT Correspondence and
Thermal Perturbative QCD\n\nAbstract: \;In this defense\, I present m
y research on various aspects of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) \;by usi
ng the AdS/CFT correspondence\, and thermal perturbative QCD approaches. A
mong them\, three topics are selected for in-depth discussion. \;The f
irst and second topics will be on the effects of external magnetic field o
n the confinement-deconfinement phase transition\, and thermalization of t
he QGP. The third topic will focus on various aspects of N = 4 super Yang-
Mills theory on the Coulomb branch (cSYM) and its string theory dual. Afte
r showing that N = 4 cSYM has most of the properties expected from pure Ya
ng-Mills theory at strong coupling\, such as confinement (with Cornell pot
ential)\, mass gap (with quantized mass spectrum)\, and thermodynamic pres
sure that vanishes at critical temperature Tc\, we will discuss the hydrod
ynamic transport coefficients\, \;and hard probe parameters (such as d
rag coefficient and jet quenching parameter) of N = 4 cSYM plasma. In addi
tion\, a new holographic mechanism for hadronization or particle productio
n from the QGP will be proposed\, and shown to be equivalent to the well-k
nown Cooper-Frye formula in the hydrodynamic or low frequency limit. Final
ly\, other results from my Ph.D. research will be briefly reviewed.\n\nKim
